Project Renovo.

Part 1

At the Institute of Atomic Level Designs, the enthusiastic scientists prepared a video session inside the lab installations. The group was conformed of three scientists, an old Caucasian grey haired man, an Afro-American man in his middle thirties and a young blond woman barely over her twenties.

The older man stood up aside a white platform about half foot above the floor. The man is putting on a black suit while the other man is helping him. The woman is checking the camera over a tripod pointing it at his colleague six feet away.

The older scientist signaled the woman and the digital camera started recording. “Testing 1… 2… 3… Good afternoon, everyone, my name is Doctor Mathews and these are my colleagues, Dr Brown at my side and Dr. Gallagher in the camera. I’m in charge of Project Renovo which I’ll refer to it in a moment.”

Doctor Mathews showed to the camera an empty green glass bottle of beer. The doctor dropped the bottle from his hand into the floor of the lab. Then he picked up the five pieces and placed them over the round platform as the camera followed everything.

“Invaluable pieces of art like ancient Greek statues or Chinese porcelain vases can not be fixed once they are broken, until now.” The scientist signaled Doctor Brown.

The scientist pushed a large device attached to the ceiling toward the platform. It was some sort of particle beam. It had wires and a system of pistons to make it easy to move it. Doctor Brown then turned it on and the sound of energy flowing was heard.

After placing the glass pieces, Dr. Mathews went to a desk behind the massive apparatus. While it charged, the leader of the project typed some commands into the computer at the desk and paused while raising his index finger, the other two scientists placed on the protective goggles they had around their neck and after that, the doctor hit the final key.

An intense light engulfed the lab. It was after five seconds that the machine stopped by itself. As the beam decelerated the flow of energy, the three scientists approached the platform. Dr. Gallagher picked up the camera off the tripod. While holding the camera in her hands, she focused on the bottle.

To the amaze of everyone, the bottle now was all fused into one piece, but something was wrong. The bottle had lost its characteristic shape and instead it looked like a piece of modern art. Also all the printed labels had vanished.

“Now what’s the problem?!” Dr. Mathews exclaimed while slamming his fist on the keyboard. “You, shut off the camera.”

“Maybe is some glitch in the reconstruction sequence.” Dr. Brown replied quickly.

“A glitch you said? You want us canceled?” Dr. Mathews replied worried while loosing his tie. “We need proof this device works and we need it by morning. Shut the machine off and follow me!”

“I understand, sir.” Dr. Brown said gulping.

“I want all the regenerating sequence reviewed and fixed, Dr. Brown.” The leader told his subordinate as he exited the lab. “I’ll make some calls to buy us more time.”

Dr. Brown looks at the particle beam status monitor and Dr. Gallagher approached him. “I noticed some ambiguity in the program at the third subroutine, Dr. Brown.”

Stressed, Dr. Brown turned to his colleague. “Not now. Clean up this mess for a new test and cancel your little party. We’ll be here all night.”

Dr. Brown handed a broom to the woman and left too. The woman buttoned back his white coat. She had beneath it a party dress and was wearing a pair of high heeled black leather boots. She got over the platform and examined the morphed bottle with the broom.

“Men can be such jerks under pressure.” Dr. Gallagher stated. “I have a degree in physics, you know. I’m not your maid.”

As the female scientists worked over the platform, at the beam display could be read “energy: 15%” Unaware of this, she kept looking at the transformed object. The reconstruction object looked stable and she adventured to pick it up with her bare hands.

“Hmm, this is strange. It seems the ink of the label printing got mixed with the bottle itself and combined into a single material.” The woman stated. “Probably Dr. Mathews used too much energy.”

The woman then heard the alert sound of the machine. She looked at the beam and noticed it was about to fire. Unconsciously, she dropped the bottle and as soon as it hit the platform, it pulverized in millions of pieces as a green dust. Trying to avoid the inevitable she reached the front of the beam and lowered the apparatus as far as she could to avoid being hit, but before she could do that, a flash blinded her for a moment.

The flash wasn’t as intense as the first one. The woman looked at the beam and noticed she was successful to point it away from her upper torso lowering down to the platform. She chuckled relieved but then detected something was wrong.

Dr. Gallagher noticed she had lost sensibility in her lower legs. She was still standing up but they seemed asleep. She tried to move but to her disbelief, she couldn’t.

“Oh no!” She murmured. “The beam hit my calves!”

She looked down to her legs and felt relived for a second; she still had two of them. It seemed the energy level was too weak to merge her legs together. The woman was too immersed in her thoughts she didn’t noticed the beam started to recharge.

“It’s reconstructing my legs.” Doctor Gallagher stated.

The woman started feeling pinches all over her lower legs. She felt them from her knees down to her toes. At this moment all her tissues were rearranging. Nerves, bones muscles all of them at the same time.

The weaves of soft pinching intensified rapidly. Soon they were too strong for her to feel comfortable. Muscle and tendon stretching beyond normal point were also perceived by her making the woman grunt as her lower limbs trembled in place.

She started to slap her legs in an effort to make them react. Her lower legs muscles were hard as wood. Then she noticed the machine ceased making charging sounds. She panicked when realizing what was going on.

“Oh no, it is going to fire again!” The woman expressed.

To be concluded...
A miracle machine that promises to change humanity, but changes the life of a single person.
